Today were going to depart a little bit from perfect health and spot-on nutrition. Id like to take a minute to discuss beer.

Beer is good. It is a mans drink. Arnold reportedly devoured several pints of beer and whole chickens after grueling squat workouts. Im not saying thats how he won any of his trophies or awards, because its not. I can almost guarantee you Arnold didnt touch alcohol during his contest prep.

However if you are not competing or scheduled to compete, then I have to ask you: What is the harm in having a beer or two with dinner a couple times a week?

New dietary guidelines warn of hidden sodium

For the first time, U.S. dietary guidelines focus on overweight – rather than average weight – people.

That is not surprising, seeing that more than one-third of children and more than two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese.

Quick hits

  • Stay active.

  • Eat no more calories than you burn; remember CICO – calories in should equal calories out – to maintain weight.
  • Limit salt – 2,300 mg or less daily for those younger than 51, then a sharp reduction to 1,500 mg for anyone 51 or older.
  • Divide the plate: half colorful veggies and fruit, a quarter high-fiber whole grains, a quarter lean protein.
  • Eat 8 ounces of fish twice a week, even if pregnant.
  • Focus on potassium, dietary fiber, calcium and vitamin D.
