Chiropractor recalls struggle to practice

FALMOUTH — When it comes to dangerous occupations, chiropractors would not usually be at the top of the list.

But 45 years ago this month, Malcolm Macdonald of Falmouth found himself on trial — facing steep fines and even potential jail time — for practicing medicine without a license, because chiropractic was illegal in Massachusetts.

Macdonald, now 79, graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1951 and returned to his hometown of Falmouth the following year to become Cape Cod’s second chiropractor.

But Massachusetts was one of four states — including Mississippi, Louisiana and New York — in which practicing chiropractic was against the law.

The Steel Onslaught Continues

If you live near Nashville, TN and think you are smelling the aroma of molten lava streaming down the side of a volcano, that is actually the smell of Red Nails being melted with hand power by the Iron Tamer Dave Whitley.

A few months back, in preparation for the RKC, I gave Dave a call to ask for pointers for preparing for the snatch test.

During the conversation, he said that he had been bending recently and had just hit a Grade 8.

“Bro, you’re close to a Red Nail,” I said.

“Really??” he said back.

Over the course of the next few weeks, Dave continued to hit Grade 8′s, but could not tackle the Red.

It’s New Year’s resolutions time! Is there anything more inspiring to bring out the runner in you? But before you lace up your shoes and start ticking off the miles, plan to kick things off slowly if you haven’t been running lately. The road does not come without risks.

“Men tend to get injuries from overdoing it,” says former Olympic runner Jeff Galloway, a columnist for Runner’s World magazine and author of Women’s Complete Guide to Running, which he co-wrote with his wife, Barbara. “Women don’t push the envelope as much when they are starting out, but because they have lower bone density, they’re more prone to stress fractures.”

While the lower back may be the easiest part of your back to acquire mass, it is also the easiest to injure. Think about all of the people with factory jobs spending all day picking up heavy boxes. These people will have very developed backs from doing this all day and they aren’t even weight lifters or bodybuilders.

The way people get injured isn’t necessarily the injured. I swear, you hear people all the time say all this shit about deadlifts being bad. This could not be further from the truth. It is the way you perform the exercise. If you pick the bar off the ground with your back rounded like crazy, then yeah, of course you are going to get injured.
