Pediatric Food Allergies on the Increase

August 9, 2010 – 1:40 pm

When I was a kid, I don’t remember anyone I knew having a food allergy. Maybe it was just that I was a kid and not paying attention, but studies are showing that childhood allergies are on the rise.

In the 10 years between 1997 and 2007, food allergies were up approximately 18 percent. In 2007 alone, 3 million children reportedly suffered from a food or digestive allergy to such items as nuts, wheat, eggs, or milk.

Dr. Susan Rudders and her research team studied emergency room visits due to allergic reactions at Children’s Hospital Boston from 2001 until 2006. The study, which involved 1,255 children, showed that visits had more than doubled and had worsened – many more children were experiencing anaphylaxis.

Last week, I put up a post on Medley Training for Combat Athletes. You can check it out here if you missed it = > Training with Medleys for Combat Athletes.

Medley Training is great for all athletes because Medleys force you to be able to execute strength for extended period times and in many different ways. The result is improved conditioning where you are able to make bigger hits and continue to fight for longer periods of time whether on the field or the mat.

Obesity Rates Still Rising, CDC Says

August 6, 2010 – 7:37 am

More Americans are becoming obese. Obesity rates inched up 1.1% between 2007 and 2009, according to a new report released by the CDC.

In just the past two years, 2.4 million people have joined the ranks of the obese. About 72.5 million U.S. adults are now obese, the report found. That’s 26.7% of the population, compared to 25.6% in 2007.

Some states are more affected than others, says Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, director of the CDC, who presented the data at a teleconference Tuesday. “The number of states where self-reported obesity is 30% or higher has tripled, from three to nine.”

What Else Can I Say?

August 6, 2010 – 2:37 am

I stare blankly at my computer screen.  Should I do another top 10 list?  ANOTHER ONE?

After posting for damned near two years I can’t help but feel like I’ve said everything that needs to be said.  The truth is that getting in top physical shape is simple.  Maybe it isn’t easy, but it damned sure doesn’t come down to any advanced mental gymnastics.

It really comes down to only three things. . .

  1. Eat real food.
  2. Train outside of your comfort zone.
  3. Recover.

What else can I say?
